Scanner Access Now Easy
How to use the coolscan backend for dustremoval with XSANE
xsane
is a SANE frontend written by Oliver.Rauch.
The latest version as of this writing is 0.30.
In order to use the infrared scanning feature for the
dust-removal you proceed like this:
Installing
- Download xsane-0.30.tgz from Olivers xsane-page
- untar it (tar xvf xsane-0.30.tgz)
- goto the directory (cd xsane-0.30)
- configure xsane (./configure)
- in frontend/xsane.h : uncomment the line
/* #define SUPPORT_RGBI */
- make
- make install
How to use xsane for the dustremoval?
If you have installed xsane as a gimp plugin proceed like this:
- Make sure xsane can be used as a gimp plugin
(by making a link from xsane to ~/.gimp/plug-ins/xsane).
- Start gimp and use "Xtns->Xsane" to start xsane
- Do preview (with advanced option Autofocus-> before preview)
- Select a region with a lot of contrast and different colors
- Select "Scan mode -> RGBI" in xsane
- Scan
- When the image is in gimp use "Image->Chanel Ops->Decompose->alpha to seperate the alpha channel from the other channels
- Change in xsane option Ired cor. red and repeat the scanning
until this alpha image is basically flat except for the dust.
The bigger the value "Ired cor. red" the bigger is the cross-talk-correction
from the red channel.
Remember the value you used, it should be a constant for the same
film-type.
- Use the plugin "dustremove" (see below) in gimp to do the actual dust-removal (select the right threshold with the slider)
If you use xsane as standalone program proceed like this:
- Start xsane
- Select "Scan mode -> RGBI" in xsane
- Select a filename ending on .png
- Do preview (with advanced option Autofocus-> before preview)
- Select a region with a lot of contrast and different colors
- Scan
- Start gimp and load the .png file you just scanned
- When the image is in gimp use "Image->Chanel Ops->Decompose->alpha to seperate the alpha channel from the other channels
- Change in xsane option Ired cor. red and repeat the scanning
until this alpha image is basically flat except for the dust.
The bigger the value "Ired cor. red" the bigger is the cross-talk-correction
from the red channel.
Remember the value you used, it should be a constant for the same
film-type.
- Use the plugin "dustremove" (see below) in gimp to do the actual dust-removal (select the right threshold with the slider)
Dustremove plugin for gimp
A preliminary version of a gimp-plugin that does the dust-removal
using the infrared channel (stored as alpha-channel as provided
by the modified xscanimage when scanning in RGBI mode)
